Ozone generator sizing: output, dose and flow

Start with a validated treatment duty

Ozone generator sizing requires more than water flow alone. First, define the treatment target, water composition, operating range and test basis. Use g/h or kg/h for required ozone output, and mg/L for dissolved ozone concentration.

Applied and transferred dose in ozone generator sizing

For a simplified single-pass balance, multiply flow Q in m³/h by transferred dose D in mg/L. This gives the transferred ozone mass rate Q × D in g/h. Next, account for transfer efficiency η as a fraction greater than zero and no greater than one. The required generator output is therefore m = Q × D / η. However, if the applied dose already comes from generator output, do not divide it by η again.

An illustrative ozone generator sizing example

For example, assume Q = 100 m³/h, transferred D = 2 mg/L and η = 0.80. This gives a transferred mass rate of 200 g/h and a calculated generator output of 250 g/h. These hypothetical inputs do not select a treatment dose or establish performance. The 50 g/h difference is an accounting balance, not a measured destructor load.

Gas flow needs matching reference conditions

If ozone mass rate m is in g/h and gas concentration C is in g/Nm³, calculate gas flow as m/C in Nm³/h. This calculation requires matching reference conditions. A gas value in g/Nm³ is not a water value in mg/L. Therefore, confirm the normal-reference conditions, measurement basis and exact instrument range.

Turn the balance into a project specification

The balance provides a starting point for ozone generator sizing. In addition, assess reaction demand, ozone decay, hydraulics, contact arrangement, recirculation, variation and the required operating margin. Then select feed gas, cooling, dosing, destruction and controls for the same operating envelope. Finally, confirm the working point against the selected model documents and representative trials.
